The Elm Lane branch of South Yorkshires Young Fire Fighter Scheme opened in July 2001. With the support of SYFRS Community Fire Safety Section, the FSYTA and South Yorkshire Fire and Civil Defence Authority the instructors have established Elm Lane as one of the county's leading branches.
DRILL NIGHT
This is our weekly meeting night on Mondaysfrom 18:30 to 21:00 (Every Monday including School holidays but excluding Bank holidays)
Drill nights are run in a simarlar way to Fire Stations with the YFf's (Young Firefighters) placed in one of four Watches, each Watch has up to 4 YFf's and one LYFf (Leading Young Firefighter). The nights consist of a mixture of short lectures (learning about our equipment, procedures and fire safety) and longer practical sessions on the drill yard.
For more detailed information about what happens on Monday nights click on "Drill Nights".
AGE LIMITS
You can join the YFS from the day of your 13th birthday and have to leave on the day of your 18th birthday.
PLEASE NOTE: As our training program is designed to take at least three years applications will not normally be accepted from anyone over 15.
UNIFORM
The YFS, like the Fire Service, is a uniformed organisation so after an 8 to 12 week induction period new members will receive their uniform (subject to regular attendance). The uniform consists of black trousers, black shirt, black shoes, red sweatshirt, red epaulettes and red fleece jacket. Members are required to maintain their uniform in a clean and tidy condition and wear it for every Drill night and when engaged in any official function or public event.
FIRE KIT
Every member is also provided with a helmet, boots, tunic (fire coat), wet legs (over trousers) and gloves. It is the responsibility of each member to keep their fire kit clean and in good order but it has to remain at Elm Lane unless specified by the OIC. Full fire kit has to be worn, over uniform, at all times while on the drill yard during a practical drill session.
COST
All uniform, fire kit, Drill nights, camps and other activities are provided free of charge. All our accommodation, equipment, uniform, fire kit and all other costs are paid for by South Yorkshire Fire & Civil Defence Authority and SYFRS. For the scheme to be "open to all" this is the way it has to be and this is the way it shall remain.
DISCIPLINE
The YFS is a disciplined organisation and as such has a strict Code of Conduct. (For full details click on "Code of Conduct")
WHO CAN JOIN
Anyone aged 13 up to, but not including, 16 can join the scheme. The only criteria is your willingness and ability to participate and comply with rules and Code of Conduct.
